5. System Lifecycle Support in MDA

MDA significantly alters the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC), shifting effort "left" toward design and modeling to reduce "downstream" costs.

Impact on the SDLC

  • Validation: Stakeholders validate the PIM early, preventing the "built the wrong thing" syndrome.
  • Parallel Work: Business teams (PIM) and Technical teams (PSM/Infrastructure) can work concurrently.
  • Automation: Drastically reduces manual coding and debugging of "plumbing" code.
  • Simulation: Systems can be simulated before implementation to check performance or user flow.
  • Evolution: To change technologies (e.g., migrating from on-prem to Cloud), you simply update the Transformation/PSM while keeping your PIM (business logic) intact.
Agile with MDA

While MDA involves upfront modeling, it is highly compatible with Agile. Models allow for rapid "what-if" scenarios and automated updates across the system, enabling safer and faster iterations.
